Why We Love This Itinerary
We love this itinerary for the freedom to follow the Northern Lights wherever the weather leads. The journey may take you through Finland, Sweden or Norway, with each evening offering another chance to look for the aurora. It’s made for night owls who want to spend as much of their Lapland stay as possible beneath the northern sky.
Northern Lights Expedition from Rovaniemi
Join a Northern Lights road trip lasting at least four days, travelling by van to areas offering promising viewing conditions. Starting and finishing in Rovaniemi, the journey may take us through northern Finland, Sweden or Norway, or all three countries.
There is no fixed route. We follow the weather and book accommodation at short notice. Driving can take up a significant part of the trip, with national park visits, short hikes or fjord stops when time allows.
This four-day itinerary is a flexible outline. Destinations, activities and timings vary with the conditions. Longer trips include additional days of travel and Aurora hunting.
Day 1 – Departure and the First Aurora Hunt
09:00–12:00 | Pick-up in Rovaniemi
Meet your guide at your accommodation, preferably in the city centre. Your exact pick-up time will be confirmed via WhatsApp the day before departure.
During the day | Following the weather
Travel towards the area offering the most promising conditions, within Finland or towards Sweden or Norway. Scenic stops or short walks are possible if the driving schedule allows.
Afternoon/evening | Accommodation check-in
Accommodation is booked at short notice along our route. Check-in may take place before or after the Aurora hunt, depending on the evening’s conditions.
Evening/night | Your first Aurora hunt
Your guide will monitor conditions and find suitable viewing locations. Photographs taken during the trip are included. Dinner time remains flexible, and you will return to your accommodation after the hunt.
Day 2 – Following the Weather
Morning | Planning the next stage
The start time depends on the previous night’s hunt and the journey ahead. Your guide will review the forecasts before deciding whether to stay nearby or move to another area.
During the day | Travel and exploration
Depending on our location and available time, we may visit a national park, take a short hike or explore the fjords in Norway. These are possible stops rather than guaranteed activities. Driving time and distance depend on the selected route.
Afternoon/evening | Reaching the viewing area
Continue towards the chosen area and arrange accommodation around the evening’s plans.
Evening/night | Aurora hunting and photography
Watch the sky from one location or move between viewing spots as conditions change. Dinner may only be possible after the hunt, sometimes around 02:00–03:00, followed by an overnight stay along the route.
Day 3 – Further into the Arctic
Morning | Checking the conditions
Review the weather and the day’s programme with your guide. We may explore the surrounding area or travel onwards in search of clearer skies.
During the day | Continuing the journey
Travel through northern Finland, Sweden or Norway, depending on our route. There may be time for a walk or a scenic stop, although longer driving distances can take up much of the day.
Afternoon/evening | Preparing for the night
Keep your warm clothing ready. Aurora hunting can involve long periods outdoors in cold conditions, and the evening’s plans remain flexible.
Evening/night | Another Aurora hunt
Your guide will adapt the hunt to the weather and viewing opportunities. The appearance, strength and duration of any display depend on natural conditions. Meal times follow the hunt, with an overnight stay at accommodation along the route.
Day 4 – Return to Rovaniemi
Departure | Beginning the return journey
Your guide will confirm the departure time during the trip, based on our location and the distance back to Rovaniemi.
During the day | Return travel
Travel back towards Rovaniemi, with stops as the schedule allows. Driving time depends on where the previous nights’ hunts have taken us.
Evening/night | A possible final Aurora hunt
We will look for the Northern Lights only if conditions and the return route allow it.
Evening or following morning | Arrival in Rovaniemi
We usually return by 05:00 the following morning, but this is not a guaranteed arrival time.
Onward travel: Do not book a 05:00 flight on the morning of our return. Please discuss your travel plans with us before booking and allow sufficient time between the trip and your departure.
